Rob Snyder: The studio is the lifeblood

The studio is the lifeblood, lifeline to any artist. I’ve always had a studio in my house, as a painter and as a ceramicist. I like the short commute. Currently, I have a wheel, an area for drawing, hand-building, glazing, and for lustering (which is ventilated). Part of the studio is for photography.

My work is eclectic and eccentric. I’m always working on new ideas, new forms, new techniques. From my life as an advertising creative director, I know strategy is critical and there’s no tolerance for “creative block”. Getting “stuck” is not an option.

I usually have several projects in progress. I work primarily in porcelain. Slow drying is important so it’s always on to the next. When everything is in various states of drying, I draw.

I make one of each piece. I have a style but I want everything I create to be unique. It’s beneficial for my collectors, museums, curators, galleries and the art market.
