How did you get started as an artist?
My great grandmother was an artist. She encouraged and taught my mother to paint and after retirement my grandfather took up oil painting completing three generations. For ten years my mother had been encouraging me to join in the family tradition. While discussing the 2012 holidays, she was asking about gift options and as I always say she did not need to bother with a gift, what really came out was “okay I’ll give painting a try”. I asked her to put together some hand-me-down paints, brushes and canvases from her stock and I would see what my hands could do. Still nervous that I had no artistic talent and having no formal art class since I was a kid, I let the supplies sit in the corner for a month looking at them every day until I had the courage to put paint to canvas. After watching a couple of Bob Ross Joy of Painting episodes I sat down to paint my first piece in January of 2013. Hundreds of pieces later, you could say the rest is history…
...my art comes from anywhere, and I like to call my art style, “Bryanism”
What themes does your work involve? Can you describe your creative process?
When it comes to being creative, I look beyond the how to do it and enjoy the process of just letting the brush work its magic. Because there is not a distinct style with each piece my art comes from anywhere, and I like to call my art style, “Bryanism”. Beyond oil painting, I continue to expand my photography perspectives, painting techniques, and other digital media concepts. In today’s tech-oriented world I continue to be influenced by photo manipulation applications and learning other digital art platforms. Themes are wide open, but typically they come from travel, unique places, music, movies and photographs taken over the years. I like sitting down and losing track of time lost in the wonders of producing an art piece. My hope is that people find something they like in this randomness, and I invite viewers to evaluate the purpose of art through my eyes and their own.
Art has originated from pop culture, music and from travel, especially my love for the National Parks.
What is your source of inspiration?
As a contemporary artist my unique and innovative approach is to produce art pieces that reflect what I enjoy in life. It comes from observing interesting things around me, but it definitely comes from life experiences. Art has originated from pop culture, music and from travel, especially my love for the National Parks. I’ve learned something new from every painting I have ever done. As I get older, I find the artist in me has come to the forefront, expanding the simple everyday things I always do into interesting pieces of art.
Do you have any artistic goals for the future that you would like to share?
To continue to expand and share art through exhibits, projects and shows across the country, online and through my website www.bbromart.com. To make art fun and allow people to see perspectives they might not otherwise find in their own world. To involve others in learning their own artistic talents, whatever this might become. Perhaps, one day, in the near future, become an Artist-In-Residence at a National Park.
