Beth Eckel: I am one of those artists who has no choice but to create

Sunday, February 1, 2026

When I walk into my art studio, I don’t only see my current projects. I see everything I’ve ever created, from the expression pieces no one has ever seen to work that has found its way into galleries and museums. I see the years of study, the long hours, the late nights spent in front of the easel. I see the self-doubt, the growth, the joy, the pride, and the fulfillment each piece has brought. I see the faces of everyone I’ve created for, and I hear their stories. It all floats in the air here, giving me purpose and drive.

This is the place where I can let everything go and step into my truest self. I know there is important work to be done here. The world needs art, and I am one of those artists who has no choice but to create. Art is in my soul, and it is my responsibility to share it with the world. The most beautiful thing I’ve ever created is a smile on someone else’s face when my art speaks to them. Those moments of connection are why I return to this space every day, and why art matters.
